HIV treatment in Western PA & Ohio

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a treatment for HIV that helps control the virus and stop its progression. Here’s how it works:

  • Stops the virus: ART prevents HIV from multiplying, lowering the amount of virus in the body.
  • Supports your immune system: It helps restore the immune system so it can function better.
  • Reduces transmission: By managing the virus, ART lowers the risk of passing HIV to others.

ART has been proven to help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. It can even suppress the virus to an undetectable level, meaning it’s so well-controlled that it can’t be transmitted to others. Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U).

Remember, early testing and treatment are key to staying healthy and stopping the spread of HIV. If you’re concerned about your sexual health or possible exposure, don’t wait – reach out to us for testing. Together, we can take control and work toward ending the HIV epidemic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ART a cure for HIV?

ART is a powerful way to manage HIV, but it’s not a cure. When taken consistently, it can reduce the virus to undetectable levels, helping people live long, healthy lives without the worry of transmitting HIV during sex.

What are the common side effects of ART drugs?

Common side effects of ART can include nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and changes in body fat. However, not everyone experiences these, and side effects can be different for each person.

How often do I need to see my healthcare provider while on ART?

Regular check-ins are important when you're on ART. Your Central Outreach healthcare provider will set up follow-up appointments to see how your treatment is going, check for any side effects, and make changes to your plan if needed.

If I’m on medication for HIV treatment, can I transmit HIV?

If you're on HIV medication and keep your viral load undetectable, you can’t pass HIV to others. This is called "Undetectable = Untransmittable" (U=U). Just be sure to take your meds as prescribed and have regular check-ups to make sure your viral load is still undetectable.
